On August 15, the Associated Press made a startling claim — that thousands of sacks of food aid meant for Somali famine victims had been stolen and were being sold openly in Mogadishu’s markets. An AP investigation revealed that sacks bearing the logos of the World Food Programme (WFP), the United States Agency for International Development (USAid) and the government of Japan were being sold in at least eight sites within the Somali capital. Among the items on sale were maize, grain and Plumpy’nut, a specially fortified peanut butter specially designed for malnourished children.
