President Jacob Zuma to attend Guinean presidential inauguration

Pretoria - President Jacob Zuma is off to West Africa to attend the inauguration of the president elect of Guinea.

Professor Alpha Condé's inauguration ceremony is scheduled for Tuesday in the capital city Conkray. He
won the run-off in the presidential elections in his country on 7 November. The results were released on 15 November, declaring him the winner by 52.52 percent.

In the run-up to the elections, Condé promised to reform the security sector and review mining contracts.

"In this regard, President Zuma is expected to convey the congratulations of the government and people of South Africa and on his own behalf to Professor Alpha Condé on his democratic election as President of Guinea," said the department of International Relations and Cooperation spokesperson, Clayson Monyela.

Zuma will be accompanied by Minister Maite Nkoana-Mashabane, who will use the visit as an opportunity to consolidate and strengthen the African agenda.

Guinea, which has suffered from political instability, gained independence from France in 1958.

The presidential election was widely regarded as being the first free and fair election since independence. Voter turnout was high, and the elections went relatively smoothly. - BuaNews
