Pretoria - As part of World Book Day, the Free State Department of Education will host a Spelling Bee competition to enhance learners' vocabulary and broaden their knowledge of the English language.
About 30 learners from grade 10 to 12 will compete in the competition to be conducted in oral form.
"Each learner will spell a word in front of the audience per round and if the word is not spelt correctly, the learner is eliminated," department spokesperson Howard Ndaba said.
Themed "Reading is Cool", World Book Day to be celebrated on Friday aims to promote and inculcate the culture of reading in the country.
Education Minister Angie Motshekga is expected to deliver her keynote address during the competition at the Motheo Electronic Resource Centre in Bloemfontein.
About 5 000 books have been distributed to identified schools and households to stimulate interest in reading.
In the Western Cape, Education Minister Donald Grant delivered 20 boxes of books to Equal Education's, The Bookery, ahead of World Book Day.
The books were donated by the Oxford University Press and include various short stories and Oxford Dictionaries. - BuaNews
