South Africa : Winners of provincial leg of Vuna Awards named

Mafikeng - The Dr Ruth Segomotsi Mompati District Municipality and Moses Kotane Local Municipality have been named the overall winners in their different municipal categories at the provincial leg of the 2008 Vuna Awards.

The national awards will be held on the 10 December 2008 at Emperor's Palace in Ekurhuleni.

The announcement was made by North West MEC for Developmental Local Government and Housing, Howard Yawa in Mafikeng on Friday at the 2008 Provincial Municipal Excellence Vuna Awards on Friday.

In addition to the R750 000 prize money that they were awarded for excellence in service delivery, both municipalities received MEC's Special Awards for demonstrating consistency in entering the awards and emerging as winners since the inception of the Municipal Performance Excellence Vuna Awards in 2003.

In the District Municipality Categories, Dr Ruth Segomotsi Mompati District Municipality was also awarded three certificates of nomination for the national Vuna Process in the following Key Performance Areas (KPA's) - good governance, municipal transformation and institutional development, local economic development.

The Bojanala Platinum District Municipality received a nomination certificate for the Service Delivery KPA.

In the Local Municipality Categories, Moses Kotane received nomination certificates for Good Governance and Municipal Transformation and Institutional Development KPA's, the City of Merafong received a nomination certificate for Financial Viability KPA and City of Matlosana for Local Economic Development KPA.

Molopo Local Municipality received a certificate for being shortlisted as a recipient of an unqualified audit report from the Auditor General.

MEC Yawa said his department was committed to working towards financially sustainable municipalities, sustainable service delivery and the implementation of local government revenue charter signed with the Provincial Treasury, South African Local Government Association (SALGA) and municipalities.

He said they would ensure that the poor harvest the glory of accelerated service delivery.

All eight provincial nominees will now proceed to the national awards.
